Does female labour force participation rates drive economic growth?
An empirical 35-year macroeconomic investigation (1990–2024) analyzing whether and how Female Labour Force Participation (FLFP) drives or responds to economic growth in India, testing Claudia Goldin's Feminization U-Curve, female education expansion, and structural sector shifts.
Modeled ILO estimate. PLFS national benchmark stands at 34.4%.
Female participation is 42% of the male rate (up from 34.3% during the 2018 trough).
Surge from 34.9% (1995) to >78% postponed labor force entry for young women ages 15–24.
Pearson r with GDP level is negative during descent; annual growth correlation is +0.145.
The Indian Feminization U-Curve: FLFP vs. Per Capita GDP ($ PPP)
Mapping female labor force participation against real per capita income ($2,000 to $10,000 PPP, 1990–2024).
Phase 1: Agrarian Shift & Education Postponement
FLFP expanded modestly from 30.3% to a peak of 34.9% (2005) during early post-liberalization, with 70%+ female employment concentrated in subsistence farming.
Phase 2: The Feminization U-Curve Descent (Income Effect)
Rapid real wage growth for male breadwinners allowed rural women to withdraw from distress labor, while female secondary enrollment surged from 50.2% to 75.6%, driving FLFP to a historical low of 26.0%.
Phase 3: Structural Rebound & Rural Enterprise
FLFP rebounded from 26.0% to 32.4% (ILO) / 35.1% (PLFS). Propelled by rural self-employment, women-led micro-enterprises, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across agricultural value chains.
